As we make our way through the first month of a new year, we have a renewed focus here at WSD on our key goals of pursuing excellence, building a caring community, and personalizing learning for each of our youngsters. Our elementary students are taking benchmark assessments this month to measure their literacy and math progress in the classroom. Our January music concerts are underway at the middle school, and also for elementary band students. The EMS boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are both having an excellent season, each with a 4-1 record so far. If you haven’t yet perused the offerings in our Connected Parent Series for 2023, take a look here. The next program in the series is a K-2 Math Parent Workshop offered on January 25, 2023. We value the partnership of our parents and guardians in making our schools the best they can be for each and every WSD student.

High School Principals Visit EMS
The Eisenhower Middle School PTO welcomed Indian Hills High School principal Dr. Vacca and Ramapo High School principal Mr. Smith to their January meeting to share information about the RIH High School District. Select EMS alumni were in attendance to give a student perspective, and parents were invited to ask questions about each high school’s programs and offerings.
Author Amy Ludwig VanDerwater Coaches Teachers
Author and teacher Amy Ludwig VanDerwater, who will provide student assemblies at our elementary schools next month, was on site this week to offer instructional coaching sessions to our teachers in writing and poetry instruction. Ms. VanDerwater has authored several children’s books and resource books for teachers, including Poems are Teachers, and Poetry: Big Thoughts in Small Packages.
EMS Winter Concerts and Elementary Band Concerts Underway
The eighth grade kicked off the EMS Winter Concert Series this week, with their chorus, band and orchestra performing various selections for parents and the community on Wednesday night under the direction of teachers Mr. Sasson, Mrs. Savery, and Mr. Salisbury. The seventh and sixth grade performances are scheduled for January 18th and 25th respectively. Washington and Coolidge fifth grade instrumentalists performed for their peers and families this week under the direction of Mr. Weidman and Mr. Vetrero, and Lincoln and Sicomac Schools will hold the same performances on January 17th and 23rd respectively.
ESSER Funded Classroom Libraries Delivered
Students are enjoying nearly $100,000 worth of new picture books and chapter books that were delivered to WSD classrooms this week. The books were purchased using ESSER funds that were issued to New Jersey school districts in the wake of the pandemic to support student learning.
