Nevan S., a Coolidge Elementary School student, has secured third place in the K-3 Under 700 category among 303 players at the 2023 National Elementary Chess Championship held in Baltimore (May 12-14, 2023) organized by the US Chess Federation.
Nevan represented Calvin Coolidge Elementary School, winning 6 consecutive games out of 7 over three days, and climbed to the first position by defeating many higher ranked players. However, he lost his last game and came 3rd overall among 303 players.
Nevan started taking interest in chess in 2022. He attended Martin Kenny's chess class organized by Wyckoff Recreation in 2022. Over the past few months, he has improved his game primarily by playing his grandfather on chess.com everyday. Nevan loves talking about chess tactics and strategies all day, and wants to continue to "play chess forever."
